Profile:

Dr. Marilyn Patricia Johncilla comes out of the Department of Sociology and Equity Studies in Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto (OISE/UT)

Her research interests are largely motivated by a concern for transnational Black/African women and their leadership in the African Diaspora. For too long there has not been a space for Canadian Black women to have their voices heard. We present this space to bring forward views, ideas and narratives on topics about them and the African diasporic community. This is also a space for women of Trinidad & Tobago.

THOUGHTS FOR TODAY

When we speak we are afraid our words will not be heard or welcomed. But when we are silent, we are still afraid. So it is better to speak.
Audre Lorde

be bold be brave be red
stop the violence against women

Black natural hairstyles should not force you to be placed in a position where you are not considered worthy for a job or considered not beautiful. For example, dreadlocks should not deny you opportunities.

For some, life imitates creativity. For others, life is creativity.

It is not enough to have a good mind; the main thing is to use it well. Rene Descartes

Create a good impression with the "you" that you have created.

Treat the world well. It was not given to you by your parents. It was lent to you for your children.

The Healer Woman

This Batik Artwork was created by Nubian Sistah Marilyn. The healer woman is my visionary representation of my grandmother, Ma Azoon, a midwife and healer woman in Palo Seco, Trinidad. She was an important indigenous woman using natural local medicines for healing all kinds of ailments. She was respected for her contributions in society and given numerous awards for her work.

I think we could have mispronounced her name and it is Ma Oshun (Yoruba). As the health care provided, she was responsible for assisting in the delivery of many, many births including myself. If you believe that she was the person who delivered you at birth, please drop me a line. (Ashe)
