Profile:

Dr. Marilyn Patricia Johncilla comes out of the Department of Sociology and Equity Studies in Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto (OISE/UT)

Her research interests are largely motivated by a concern for transnational Black/African women and their leadership in the African Diaspora. Her journey in the academy has been influenced by the discursive framework of Anti-colonial, Indigenous Knowledges, Black Feminisms/Womanism, Antiracism Education and Caribbean Studies through a critical sociological perspective. Dr. Johncilla's career in teaching continues to be inspired from these different locations.

The Healer Woman

This Batik Artwork was created by Nubian Sistah Marilyn. The healer woman is my visionary representation of my grandmother, Ma Azoon, a midwife and healer woman in Palo Seco, Trinidad. She was an important indigenous woman using natural local medicines for healing all kinds of ailments. She was respected for her contributions in society and given numerous awards for her work.

I think we could have mispronounced her name and it is Ma Oshun (Yoruba). As the health care provider, she was responsible for assisting in the delivery of many, many births including myself. If you believe that she was the person who delivered you at birth, please drop me a line. (Ashe)
