The only true musical instrument invented in the 20th century!

THE NETWORK

THE PANATICS STEELBAND NETWORK is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of the music of the steelband in Ontario. The organization was incorporated in April 1991.

Organization members need not be steelband players as there are several members engaged in activities behind the scenes, who no longer play on a regular basis. There is a distinctive family orientation to our steelband, since a large portion of its membership consists of parents and thier children.

The Panatics Steelband has approximately 25 core players, through smaller units perfom at certain functions. For CARIBANA, as many as 45 play in the parade. The "Young Panatics", made up of teenagers, form a separate orchestra and they perform music arranged specifically for them, ususlly at functions where the focus is on youth. They also perform with the adults on various occasions.

PURPOSE, AIM & OBJECTIVES

The PURPOSE of the organization is to contribute to a progressive steelband movement within Canada. The major focus is to develop young talent and provide a positive environment for young people to realize their individual strengths and aspirations. In the areas of steelband arts and culture, the AIM is to encourage and build a strong sense of awareness of the steelband movement as it progressed from Trinidad and Tobago to Canada, while adhering to traditional norms.

OBJECTIVES

THE STEELPAN

The steelpan is a musical instrument invented in Trinidad and Tobago in the late 1930's and early 1940's. Musicologists have classed it as the only true musical instrument invented in the 20th century.

Made from steel, the pan part of its name is owed to its development out of tin pans and oil drums in its infant stages. Any musical note can be played on the range of pans by means of a couple of hand-held sticks with rubber tips. Trinidad and Tobago Instruments Limited

"Double second" steelpans (alto voice instrument), from the wide range that make up a steelband.

The artform has spread worldwide since the early 1950's when a steelband orchestra introduced the steelband to the world at the Festival of Britian in 1951 making it an instrument today less than 50 years old.

Today in Ontario, the artform is included in the musical program at various schools, and community art groups. It continues to gain recognition for its versatility and uniqueness as many top professional artistes incorporate the steelpan in their performances.

Some terms in the steelband language are: pan (or steelpan), steelband (or steel orchestra), pannist, pan maker, pan tuner, pan arranger, and of course Panatics.
